Buying a Second-Hand Automatic Vehicle – What to Look out for?
The used car market presents a number of risks. It’s hard to know for certain the condition of a vehicle and how it was treated by the previous owner. Luckily, there are a few simple steps you can take to help separate the good from the bad.
Does it sound too good to be true?
“It’s done no work, the kilometres are low, and it’s really cheap.” These can often be red flags. While you don’t want to be overly cynical, if you find yourself thinking, If it’s such a great car, then why are they selling it? it’s worth digging deeper and asking more questions.
Check the service history
Take a look at the service book. See if the vehicle has been maintained regularly, and check that the entries have been completed properly. Ask whether the transmission has ever been serviced. Transmission maintenance is often overlooked, and many customers assume it’s included in regular logbook servicing. Unfortunately, that’s not always the case.
Get your own inspection done
Book your own inspection with a trusted mechanic. It may cost you a little more, and it can take some organising, but having peace of mind that you’re buying a reliable, safe vehicle is always worth it. If the seller doesn’t want an independent inspection done, that should raise concern.
In Queensland, any vehicle sold with registration must have a roadworthy certificate or safety inspection. However, not all inspections are done to the same standard. It’s worth getting your own check done by a workshop you trust.
Ask a friend to help
If you’re not mechanically minded, ask a friend or family member who is to come with you to inspect the vehicle. They might pick up on things you don’t notice and ask questions you may not feel confident asking.
The sad truth
We’re always happy to discuss common issues we see and what vehicles to steer clear of. In the last 12 months, we’ve seen a number of customers bring in newly registered second-hand vehicles only to discover major drivability issues. In many cases, the transmission has significant internal damage, and the repairs are costly.
So please, do your research and take care when buying a used vehicle. If you’re unsure, reach out. We’re here to help.
